Question 1: How does Wireless Technology work?

If you want to understand wireless networking at its simplest level, think about a pair of $20 walkie-talkies that you might purchase at The Warehouse. These are small radios that can transmit and receive radio signals. When you talk into a Walkie-Talkie, your voice is picked up by a microphone, encoded onto a radio frequency and transmitted with the antenna. Another walkie-talkie can receive the transmission with its antenna, decode your voice from the radio signal and drive a speaker.

Let's imagine that you want to connect two computers together in a network using walkie-talkie technology:

  • You would equip each computer with a walkie-talkie.
  • You would give each computer a way to set whether it wants to transmit or receive.
  • You would give the computer a way to turn its binary- 1s and 0s, into two different beeps that the walkie-talkie could transmit and receive and convert back and forth between beeps and 1s/0s.

The radios used in WiFi are not so different from the radios used in $20 walkie-talkies. They have the ability to transmit and receive. They have the ability to convert 1s and 0s into radio waves and then back into 1s and 0s.

Because they are transmitting at much higher frequencies than a Walkie-Talkie, and because of the encoding techniques, WiFi radios can handle a lot more data per second. 802.11b can handle up to 11 megabits per second (although 7 megabits per second is more typical, and 802.11b may fall back as low as 1 or 2 megabits per second if there is a lot of interference). 802.11a and 802.11g can handle up to 54 megabits per second (although 30 megabits per second is more typical).

Question 2: What are the Email settings for programs like Outlook?

Ensure that under the username you use the full name including domain eg: userabc@skynetnz.com
(use userabc@highspeednet.co.nz if using a highspeednet.co.nz mail box)

Incoming mail server (POP3) = pop.skynetnz.com
Outgoing mail server (SMTP) = smtp.skynetnz.com

You will also need to enable outlook retreval within the setting of the webmail interface click here.

Under outgoing server tab, ensure that you have ticked the My Outgoing Server (smtp) requires authentication and use same settings as my incoming mail server radio

Under the advanced tab choose Incoming Mail Server (POP3): 995 and check this server requires an encrypted connection SSL check box

Also outgoing server (SMPT): 465 and check the his server requires an encrypted connection SSL check box

When you press the Send/Receive button you will receive a notification message asking you to accept a security certificate, you will need to click accept.

Question 3: What should I do if my connection stops working?
Because of the type of equipment that is deployed Skynet, simply reseting your wireless router by switching the power off to your wireless connection will fix the problem - nine times out of ten. If this does not fix the problem please do not hesitate to call us on 0800-475963.

Question 4: What should I do if I beleive my wireless connection is faulty?
Phone us immediately, so that we can organise a Skynet contractor to inspect your connection. If it is found that the wireless network is not at fault you will be charged the contractors fee, please phone for current rates.

Question 5: Why are our internet connections so affordable when compared to other ISP's?
Most ISP's provide you with an internet connection that is suitable for setting up your own publicly addressable service, these may include setting up your own Mail server, Web server, Gaming server Ftp server etc. Our research has concluded that almost all family users will never use these types of features, so why should you have to pay for them? Well we dont think you should have to.

Question 6: Will I be able to walk around the house using my laptop or pocket PC on the Internet?
No. The type of network utilised by Skynet is a fixed wireless network, this means that although you are connected through a wireless modem, your computer will still plug into a cable. A similar system is used by Skyl TV where a dish and decoder are used.

Question 7: What should I do if I want to connect another computer?
You will need to set up a home network. For more information type "setting up a home network" in any search engine. If you would like to have a service man call around and create a home or business network please call us for one of our prefered partners.

Question 8: Can I use my username/password on another computer?
Yes. By setting up a new PPPoE connection and entering your username/password you will be allowed to logon to the network. (Will not allow two simultaneous sessions).

Question 9: What about my IP address and DNS settings?
This should be set to Obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DNS server address automatically. Even if you do have addresses setup on your local area connection provided the connection is enabled your pppoe dialer will still work

Question 10: Why are rural connections more expensive to set up?
Our rural connections use special equipment to achieve great performance over a much longer distance, this equipment is unfortunately much more expensive we therefore need to charge slightly more on the installations so that we can avoid a higher monthly fee.
